About Us

Kirby Media Design is owned and operated by Loyd Kirby. He brings a unique combination of more than 15 years of experience and a graduate-level education into each web site he designs.

The overall goal of Kirby Media Design is to create and maintain an effective internet presence for small- and medium-sized businesses that do not have the personnel or resources to do so. Furthermore, we will make a concerted effort to get to know your organization and what makes it unique. We’re not going bombard you with a bunch of technical jargon that requires a computer science degree to understand, nor are we going to try to sell you computers or software.

Our purpose is to help you get the word out about your business or organization…period.

As mentioned at the top of the pages of our web site, we consider ourselves to be your "one-stop solution" for internet presence creation and maintenance. That means that we will handle all the tasks related to the development and upkeep of all areas related to your web site and social networking presence. That means all the facets involved in creating an internet presence--page design, digital photography or videography, editing, e-mail creation, Twitter and Facebook set-up--will be handled in-house, so our schedule won't be affected by another company's turn-around time on a particular project. For a detailed listing with more information about the services we offer, check out the FAQ (frequently asked questions) area of our web site.

If you desire assistance in other areas of your business’ communication needs, we’ll do what we can to help. If you need assistance in designing letterhead, business cards, Powerpoint slide shows, or just trying to get that new printer hooked up to your computer, simply ask. If we can help, we will; if we can’t, we’ll tell you so and help you try to find a solution in a timely manner. Our purpose in developing and maintaining your web site isn’t to add one more thing to your plate to consume your time. Our objective is to make the creation and updating of your web site as worry-free and pain-free as possible for you.

About the Owner

The owner, Loyd Kirby, had an active interest in web development and multimedia design before it was trendy to do so. His course of study while obtaining his master's degree in communication emphasized internet and digital video technologies and multimedia authoring platforms. While enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Illinois-Springfield, he utilized Mac-based software to combine text, video, audio, and graphics into a self-contained multimedia creation as the final project in completing his master’s degree in communication. For this and other achievements, the UIS graduate communication faculty selected him as student marshal for the master’s communication program at his graduation, the highest honor the faculty can bestow upon students.

Loyd was hired as a full-time faculty member at Lincoln College, a position he held for several years. His responsibilities included serving general manager and faculty adviser of the college’s FM radio station. In addition, his duties at various times included acting as the college’s public relations director, sports information director, student newspaper adviser, and yearbook adviser. He created and put the first Lincoln College institutional web site online. He also designed, proposed, and taught new courses on web design and mass communication, both of which were added to the college’s curriculum and continue to be offered today. He authored an article for Innovation Abstracts on methodology for utilizing the Internet as an educational tool and resource in the classroom.

Loyd also served as webmaster in the Southern Illinois University Department of Surgery. During his time there, he put a new departmental web site which quickly became the most-visited web site of all departments within the school. Following his revamping of the site, traffic increased by over 400 percent in six months. In addition, he maintained and designed sites for five Surgery-affiliated clinics as well as information on more than 30 faculty members and over 40 clinical sites. He was asked to serve as webmaster on a five-member committee to redesign the school-wide clinical site. He was selected to give a school-wide presentation on effective use of the internet/web sites and integration of multimedia information into a web site.

Since 2005, Loyd has served as an adjunct faculty member at Robert Morris University, teaching undergraduate courses in communication, business presentations, and problem solving with computers. He has also worked as a writer and photographer for the Lincoln Daily News. He has utilized his interest in digital photography and videography in assisting with various video and publicity projects for the performing arts department of his daughter’s high school.

Loyd was born into a family with an interest in communication and saw that from an early age:

  • His dad, Raymond Kirby, worked in communications when he served as a member the US Army Signal Corps from 1951-52 during the Korean Conflict. Following his return to the states, he was a square dance caller and an avid CB radio user in the Waynesville, Illinois area.
  • His mom, Pat Kirby, regularly served as the announcer for fourth of July and fall festival parades in Waynesville and worked for almost 20 years at the Lincoln Courier newspaper in Lincoln, Illinois, working her way from keypunch operator to copy editor to reporter.
  • His sister, Dianna Kirby, was active in Voice of Democracy competitions while in high school, then went on to work at the FM radio station at Sangamon State University (now the University of Illinois-Springfield). Upon graduation, she went on to work as traffic manager at WIL-AM/FM in St. Louis and then as a manager at KCLC-FM at Lindenwood University in St. Charles. She then took a position at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley as general manager KCFV-FM. While becoming active as a national officer in Alpha Epsilon Rho (the National Broadcasting Society), she held that position for almost 20 years at Flo Valley, where there is now an award, the Dianna L. Kirby Spirit Award, presented annually in her honor to a deserving broadcasting student.

Recently, Loyd and his wife Jennifer (who also earned a degree in communication from the University of Illinois-Springfield) celebrated their first anniversary. Along with his daughter Lorenda, they have traveled to Florida (to visit relatives on Jennifer's side of the family, as well as the spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies), Pennsylvania (to visit the home stadium of the Phillies, as well as the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and historic sites of the area, including the village of Kirby, Pennsylvania, named for one of Loyd's ancestors), New York (where they saw a show on Broadway), and Oklahoma (to visit relatives on Loyd's side of the family).

Loyd has played slow-pitch softball since the age of 16 and includes pitching a perfect game among his most memorable accomplishments on the field. He has played the drums for over 35 years, during which he has served as percussionist for several community theatre productions (and one high school production at the last minute on opening night); he has had the privilege of playing for three productions in which his daughter was on stage.

What does any of this have to do with your web site? It simply is included here to illustrate that there is a unique person with family, hobbies, and career interests behind the web site. Just as each person has a singularly unique identity, so too does every business. Each business is unique, and at Kirby Media Design, we will not just throw your information into a cookie-cutter mechanism to produce a web site. Something that works well for one business may not be as effective for another business. Our goal is to treat you and your business like the singular individual that you are in producing an internet presence that effectively communicates to your audience.
